God of Carnage on Broadway

I went to go see God of Carnage with a couple of friends last night. The show was absolutely fantastic! James Gandolfini had the crowd falling apart with his character’s mob references in how he made his kid’s hamster “disappear” and his childhood gang talks with Jeff Daniels. Hope Davis’ character’s vomiting all over the set was a bit much, but certainly broke up the long dialog it followed. Marcia Gay Harden really looked like she was giving James’ character a serious beating at one point, and she flung herself at him like she was going for blood!

The tickets were a bit pricey, and I think that I ended up getting a little more than I paid for…

An elderly woman to my right kept putting one of her hands on my knee and squeezing. She started breathing heavily at one point, and I couldn’t stop thinking to myself, “what the fuck is going on? is she having a heart attack or something? Am I just that incredibly awesome that my appeal to the opposite sex transcends generations?” Who knows. I’m just happy her hand didn’t go any further than my knee or I’d have to slap a granny.

We headed over to the Times Square Arts Center after the performance to catch a friend, James Goff, perform in a comedy show. The guy is nuts. I had this fear in the back of my head that he would somehow single me out in the crowd, which was magnified a million times once we were sat directly to the right of the stage, but he was good. James said hi, told the crowd who I was, and then explained why it’s always important to be nice to the IT guy. According to James, “if you aren’t nice to the IT guy, he’ll CTRL-ALT-DELETE you.” So true. If you ever happen to be in New York, be sure to catch him.

He also referred to me during a joke involving Call of Duty, at which point I really wanted to get up and tell him that I play Rainbow Six and not that COD crap, but I refrained.

My friends and I went to catch up with James after the show, and I ended up running in to another friend I haven’t seen in ages. Kemol is one of those folks that I run in to randomly, but it turned out that he came to see James perform on most weekends. It was a totally unexpected surprise and really good to catch up with him for a bit as well. As him and I were chatting, my friends came back with the oddest story. Some woman came up to them while in the ladies room and asked if I was “the actor from American History X”. Neither of them have seen the movie, and it’s been ages since I have, so the only person I could guess she was thinking of was Ethan Suplee. I mean, come on woman! I remind you of the bully from Boy Meets World? Someone well exceeded the 2 drink minimum…

Everyone ended up piling in to cabs and heading to Cosmic Cantina, an organic mexican spot in the East Village after saying goodbye to James. Cosmic Cantina is a bit small and seems to be a major spot for the NYU crowd, but the burritos are great and the blacklit bar has a good feel. Again, it’s small but cozy. Kemol had to take over DJ responsibilities, so we decided to call it a night.

Of course, the night wasn’t over until the lovely ride home on the LIRR. The trains are absolute shit after 10PM or so. Seriously. There’s even someone on the Web that has a section of a blog dedicated to just how fucked up the LIRR is. The trains are full of drunk kids, the restrooms stop functioning or begin to overflow, and the trains have a very distinct “aroma”. It’s somewhere between cheap perfume, cheap italian food,  and a broken sewer line. And just to make things even better, some old woman tried resting on a pole and ended up planting her ass right in to my face. It was like I had turned in to a geriatric magnet last night. It must have been the cologne or something. I think the D&G Masculine will be sitting towards the back of the shelf for a while…

Aside from the train, which is always to be expected, the night was great. Next weekend is all business though. I have to get some personal work done and then finish up the 10 year high school reunion site for my class.

Oh, and a quick note to all of the ladies out there. Feel free to drop me a line… unless you have an AARP card.
